A Brand New Day

This song is from my college days...part of what was called the Soph Show because it was performed by Sophomores for the incoming Freshman class, and also performed as a general orientation show.

As an insight into the process, here are the original lyrics that were given to me, along with deletions/changes that I made to fit my music better and still keep the overall message of the song.  As you will hear, it is often up to the composer to make such adjustments, and even rewrite lines, or add new ones from scratch.  It is all part of the creative process of writing a song.

Listen to me, I've been through this before
I know what you're thinking and quite a lot more.
I've wasted a year so far sitting around
So take my advice, get your feet on the ground
And start living, sharing, giving, daring
There's no time like now to begin.

You're on your way
A new world is open for you  {New worlds are open for you}
Stand tall or it will ignore you  {Now stand tall, don't let them pass you by.}
Just what do you think you've got to lose?
You see all that lies before you
Now choose.

How can I be noticed?
How can I stand out?
How can I discover
What life is all about?
Will I be at home here
Or feel out of place?
Will I be attractive
Or just another face?

(insert new Chorus to break up verses)

{A brand new day so much to leave behind.}
{And all my dreams seem so far away.}

Will life be exciting
Or a drab routine?
Will I be important
Or part of a machine?
All these big decisions
Which way should I go
Why can't someone tell me
I wish I could know.   {I wish that I could know.}

A brand new day
With so much to leave behind you.   {So much to leave behind}
It's hard to make up your mind to
   {And all my dreams seem so far away.}
It could be divine, it could be hell
And as for what we will find, who
Can tell?

Don't sit and do nothing, you've gotta get moving
Get liberated, sister.  Forget about your mister
And start learning just how to live
We know you have something to give
So join us!
Get liberated, sister.  Forget about your mister
And start learning now just how to live.
We know you have something to give
So join us!

And who can say
What's waiting around the bend for us
What gifts will the future send for us
I wish I knew how the story goes
What's written in the end for us?
Who knows?
Who cares?
Who knows?

{And who can guess/who can guess
What lies in the future?
And who can say/who can say
What's waiting 'round the bend?
And who can guess/who can guess
What lies in the future?

And who can say
What's waiting 'round the bend?}
