Someone Like You

Rebekah, one of my employees, came back from college to work for a few weeks during her break, and mentioned that I just needed to find “someone like Elyse” for myself.  The words stuck in my head for months, until one night I was playing ‘For Elyse’ on the piano and heard “Someone Like You” whenever I played those notes.  Scrambling for paper, I scribbled down lyrics as fast as I could, capturing the mood of talking with a friend, and leading to the inevitable concluding line.

Of course, in reality, Elyse wasn’t the one I was imagining, but ‘someone like her’.  And so my quest continues…searching for the ‘One’ who is “touched and moved by my music and stories…who accepts me as the person I am…who has a good heart, a sharp mind, and a caring conscience…who has a passionate soul…who has compassion for animals, love of nature, and concern for humanity…who is not afraid to treat me as their equal…who affects my unconscious emotions when I think about her, and my conscious emotions when she is near…”

Someone Like You

Why can’t someone
Touch my life like you
Why can’t I find someone to hold who acts like you do?
Someone like you, who makes me feel like life is all right.
Why can’t I find someone with your smile that makes me smile
Could you help me find someone with passion in her soul like yours?
Someone who cares, like you who loves that part that we share.
Will you help me find someone to love.

When you’re near me
I can smell your hair
Sometimes I look—you see me look, and then I turn away.
Please don’t worry, even friends can feel at times like more than friends.
And when I get home, you still remain—it seems like you’re there.
Pictures given, scented candles, all surround me still.
Then I miss you, really miss you then.

I can’t touch you
Dreams are all I have
Please don’t be mad, it’s in my mind, you lying so near.
I see your eyes, I touch your face, I know it can’t be.
We’re so different; still we find those diff’rences we love.
Please remind me why we can’t be more than friends.
Someone like you, that’s who I want
And so I ask now
Would you mind if I asked you
Not to be my friend
Since I don’t want just someone like you

I want you.
